An act establishing the position of Communication and Media Relations Specialist. Be it enacted by the ASEWU Council that: SECTION 1: Purpose The purpose of the Communication and Media Relations Specialist is to provide the student government a liaison who will inform its constituency about the ASEWU; its activities and programs; and legislative issues and concerns on a consistent and regular basis. SECTION 2: Description of Job Responsibilities The Communication and Media Relations Specialist is responsible for the following areas. - On a weekly basis, prepare and distribute at least one (1) written press release that includes the actions, activities, programs, legislative concerns and issues addressed by the ASEWU Council. These press releases should also include programs and concerns presented by ASEWU registered clubs and organizations and the activities of the EWU Board of Trustees which directly or indirectly affect the general student population.
- Assist the ASEWU program support supervisor in the advertising of job openings in the ASEWU office.
- Develop a relationship and meet with the various media outlets in the community including, but not limited to, the university’s media campaign specialist, the Director of University Relations, The Easterner, The Focus, The Cheney Press, The Spokesman Review, The Inlander, the KEWU [campus radio station], and local area television and radio stations. The purpose of these regularly scheduled meetings is to inform the above-mentioned media of the actions, activities, projects and concerns of the student government.
- Coordinate quarterly “state of the ASEWU” public forums to provide Eastern students an opportunity to address and ask questions or bring up concerns to their student representatives.
- Attend the following meetings, events, and programs and include pertinent information from these activities as it directly affects the general student population in the weekly press releases.
- Weekly ASEWU Council meetings and work sessions.
- Monthly clubs and organization meetings.
- Weekly meetings of the ASEWU executive staff.
- The Service and Activity Fee Committee meetings.
- University sponsored forums that directly or indirectly affect EWU students.
- Quarterly ASEWU leadership retreats.
- In accordance with bylaw 313, section II, A, serve as chair of the Public Relations Committee.
- Other meetings as determined by the student government officers and personnel.
In order to accurately and positively reflect the activities and endeavors of student government, student life and the events of student clubs and organizations, attendance at the above-mentioned functions is critical to the position of the Communication and Media Relations Specialist. - Maintain in the ASEWU office a minimum of five (5) hours a week. This time cannot coincide with the time the student is participating in any of the above-established meetings.
- Prepare materials to advertise student government meetings, forums, activities, programs and the yearly student body elections.
- Provide assistance to Eagle Entertainment and student clubs and organizations in advertising these organizations’ programs, events and activities.
- Investigate, research and implement other methods to better inform the general student population and the campus community about the activities and projects of the student government.
- Prepare and distribute a once monthly email newsletter that includes ASEWU Council news and information, as well as information submitted by other clubs and organizations.
- Other duties as assigned by the ASEWU Program Support Supervisor I, the ASEWU Executives or an ASEWU Council Representative.
SECTION 3: Office Hours The Communication and Media Relations Specialist shall establish and maintain a minimum of eight (8) office hours per week (excluding finals week) of the current academic quarter. Said office hours shall: - Be scheduled between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on the Cheney campus, or between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. at a Spokane satellite campus and
- Be established and posted in the ASEWU offices by the end of the first week of the current academic quarter.
SECTION 4: Job Qualifications and Eligibility Applicants for this position shall meet the following criteria. - At the time of application, he/she shall have at the university a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. If selected for the position, the student shall maintain a 2.5 cumulative grade point average during his/her tenure in the said position.
- Undergraduate applicants must be currently enrolled at EWU with at least six (6) credit hours. Graduate applicants must be currently enrolled at EWU with at least five (5) credit hours.
- Undergraduate applicants must have been an EWU student the previous quarter (excluding summer quarter) and completed at least six (6) or more credits. Graduate applicants must have been an EWU student the previous quarter (excluding summer quarter) and completed at least five (5) or more credits.
- The applicant must be at least a junior class standing and have a declared major in technical communication, journalism and public relations, business administration in marketing, or communication studies in public relations. If the applicant is a graduate student, his/her undergraduate work in the above-mentioned majors will also meet this qualification. Two (2) years of work experience in the field of public relations will substitute for the educational requirements.
- Provide written demonstration of his/her writing and publication skills.
SECTION 5: Application and Selection Process Applications for this position will be advertised for a minimum of one (1) academic week and shall be posted in the university’s Student Employment office and in The Focus for this time period. The application packet will include a cover letter, resumé (not to exceed two (2) pages), a list of three (3) references with phone numbers and the required pre-employment form from Student Employment and the standard ASEWU application form. In addition, all applicants will be required to prepare a one (1)-page press release. The interviewing committee will review the applications and the group will determine which applicants will be interviewed. The interviewing committee shall consist of the following individuals. - ASEWU President.
- ASEWU Executive Vice President.
- One (1) ASEWU Council Representative.
- ASEWU Program Support Supervisor.
With the consensus of the interviewing committee, the ASEWU program support supervisor will forward to the ASEWU Council the top applicant’s name for their approval. Approval will be with a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the ASEWU Council. SECTION 6: Salary The salary for this position will be determined in the following manner. - The communication and media relations specialist shall receive a quarterly salary not to exceed two-thirds (2/3) of in-state undergraduate tuition (excluding summer quarter).
SECTION 7: Term of Office The student will serve in the position of Communication and Media Relations Specialist for the term of the presidency under which he/she was appointed. If the Communication and Media Relations Specialist fails to perform his/her duties as outlined in this bylaw, the ASEWU Council may remove him/her by a two-thirds (2/3) vote.
